Design the whole yard, build it in stages
Plenty of clients build the patio and the wall this year and add the kitchen, or the pool, later. We draw the whole yard up front either way, so the second phase lands on a plan rather than a compromise.
Start your projectHow we plan outdoor rooms
Rooms, not features
Dining, lounging and cooking each need their own space and a clear way between them. That is what makes a yard get used.
Built on real base
Paver base and drainage first. We dig deep, compact properly and drain everything away from the house.
Finished the same season
Walls, surfaces, lighting and planting land together, so you are not looking at bare dirt until next spring.

How a landscape project runs

Site prep and layout
Stage 1
Access is established and protected, and the design is laid out on the ground so you can see the footprint before anything moves.

Excavation and grading
Stage 2
We dig to depth and set the grade, because where the water goes decides whether the rest of it lasts.

Structure and rough-in
Stage 3
Walls, footings and compacted bases go in, along with the utility rough-in for kitchens, lighting and irrigation. Everything buried is done before anything is laid on top of it.

Hardscape surfaces
Stage 4
Patios, walkways and driveways are laid on those bases, and the structures they carry go up.

Planting and finish
Stage 5
Plantings, sod, lighting and final grading. The lighting gets aimed after dark, which is the only time you can aim it properly.

Outdoor living questions

Ask us an outdoor living question
What if we add a pool later?
Plenty of clients do, which is why we draw the whole yard now even when only part of it is being built. We build the pools too, so the later phase lands on the same plan.
How much does a backyard project cost?
A paver patio starts in the mid five figures for a usable size; a full outdoor room with kitchen and shade runs considerably more. Our cost guides give real ranges.
When is the best time to build?
Spring through late fall. Design in winter and you get the earliest build dates and the best material availability.
Can we do it in phases?
Yes. We plan sleeves, base and drainage for later phases during the first dig so nothing gets torn up twice.
Do you fix drainage problems?
Regularly. Most hardscape failures we are called to look at are drainage failures wearing a paver costume.
Do you maintain what you build?
We do. Seasonal landscape maintenance keeps planting, beds and lighting the way we left them.
